I would appreciate suggestions on the best way to do this from anyone who has done any of this. We will start with census records in the US, but plan to do this for other record groups and for other places, including Canada and British Isles. Our preliminary plan for census records was to have volunteers develop lists from census indexes (where available), extract the census records from microfilm onto forms, enter the data into computers, send computerized data to central place to be combined, and then make it available as needed. Questions include: (1) Are computerized census indexes available on Internet? (2) Are some of the censuses (not just indexes) already computerized? (3) What forms are best to use (ease of use, availability, completeness, etc.)? (4)Is there software available for this task, and would it be better to use that instead of a generalized database like Microsoft Access? (If it were free or low cost that might make it easy to send to all project volunteers to install on their computers, vs Access which not everyone would have or want.) (5) Does anyone have any similar suggestions for gathering other types of data like vital records, obituaries, wills and deeds, etc.? Thanks for any help. Three recommendations: 1. Consider allowing such efforts to be merged with other "non-GRAVES" work of a similar nature, agreeing on a common format for data and for access. I recommend coordination with the world-genweb project and dividing up the data geographically. 2. Each entry should be checked for accuracy by someone other than the person who created it. 3. Each output of a search should begin with a brief admonition that the receiver ought to sooner or later do his/her own checking against the original. And one possibility to consider: Consider storing each record in a form of GEDCOM, creating the database via LifeLines, and using the database version of LifeLines to generate HTML output. This method has been successful for making Web-based genealogies, and could easily be adapted to searching individual records. There are folks listening who could help (in the sense of advice, if not code) but I am not going to mention names. Those that can afford the time will undoubtedly speak up. I say possibility, because I'm not insisting this is the best way. But it's certainly good enough to merit being in the competition. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- W. My husbands mother and stepfather lived first in manhattan and then in the bronx. Apparently my husband never asked questions of his stepfather. Any info would help.
