The last posted URL I saw on this list for USGenWeb was on July 17 and was: http://www.teleport.com/~jmurphy/states.html That URL no longer works USGenWeb now has its own domain: http://www.usgenweb.com/ For a specific state's project, e.g., NY, go to: http://www.usgenweb.com/ny Be sure to use all lower case letters! For the states I've looked at, the main information being supplied by volunteers is a county-by-county genealogical resource directory. There are also "helpers" that sometimes include a surname search, often through Gene Stark's excellent GENDEX. I am not conected with USGenWeb, but I admire what's been done so far. Jeff Murphy was the original driver and John Rigdon is now head honcho. Both have been frequent contributors to this mailing list. They and all others who contribute deserve commendation. The input-system of Lifelines is so strange and impossibly to port, that we think to throw it away. What is positive with lifelines: - the script language - it runs under Unix - it is for free What is negative with lifelines: - it runs under DOS only with this strange curses-interface, you cannot overcome it -it runs under Unix only with this strange curses-interface, you have to drop all output from it - the unclear access to persons via names What is unclear: - how efficient would be a solution with a relational database? - are there runtime comparisons? - how behaves Lifelines with really large data sets? True GEDCOM is a frame data structure - it includes, for example, inheritance for sources. Relational databases have considerable difficulty representing such concepts. An Oracle database, which allows SQL queries to "tree walk" would, however most genealogists do not have access to a home Oracle system. The uFTi database categorises tags into these different types of data (TABLES) People Notes (eg occupations, addresses) Events (eg hatch, match, dispatch, degree awards etc) Sources Each Note and Event can have a subsidiary tag associated with it, for example a marriage can have a religious affiliation included. These are all data driven. As I see it, if you want to use GEDCOM fully, use lifelines.
