Friends who I mostly watched and admired from the 'peanut gallery', I have been looking for other employment in the past several months, and have been interviewing in the daytime - working hours, of course - maybe once every 2 weeks or so. Job cuts are everywhere and I knew mine was on order since before Christmas. Now, my office has given me 2 weeks notice that my position is no more, and terminated my computer usage as of today. My hat's off to you and I hope you all continue the very good work. Scott, I sincerely hope your interruption in being a part of this project is very short. Congratulations about the new job. I must now say Good-bye and 'See ya' later!' At some point in the future I will be back, I just don't know when right now. The aim of the project is to identify by location all genealogical data on the Web which relates to Kentucky. To this end, we have begun by creating an umbrella page, which directs the user to any county web page for the state which currently exists. On each of these pages, we want to be able to point to the databases which contain data in that county. I have asked that each county consider including an Alta Vista search for "Muhlenberg Kentucky genealogy", with Muhlenberg being changed to the appropriate county name. However, the real problem with genealogy is to be able to locate a given name within an area. And it is not made simpler that genealogy has come to rely on on-the-fly html generators - pages generated on request. This means that your system can never get a hit on those pages, as they don't exist until the user requests them to be displayed. Frankly, I'm at a loss. Right now the problem is partially solved by some software which indexes some of the sites out there. Another interested party, John Rigdon, periodically searches for names embedded in pages and generates an index, but the information must be archived, and therefore the typical web user does not seek for it. What we genealogists really need is for a major search engine to turn its energies to this area, and provide the necessary space to accomodate this kind of lookup. It does not exist at present. Without it, we are left to devise our own indexes, which do not agree in format or purpose, and many of which cannot be maintained in a manner which can easily be searched. I would *love* to be able to search for "Hancock Trigg Kentucky Genealogy" and find that it is available from several online databases. Is there anything you can do to help all us genealogists? There are two mailing lists which deal with this indexing issue, and for their information I have forwarded a copy of this message to them. With your permission, I will forward your reply to them also. Thanks in advance for considering our request. Maintenance of genealogical records is a Chinese tradition since Chinese writing was invented in the Shang Dynasty. The records are kept in the ancestral temple of each village, where subsequent generations can make copies. Each generation is very scrupulous about maintaining careful records. Unfortunately, most of these temples and records were destroyed during the Cultural Revolution in China in the late 1960s. My copy was made by my grandfather in 1937 and brought to Malaysia. I have translated part of it and put it onto the webpage. I am not aware of any Chinese genealogies on the World Wide Web, and I invite comment from genealogical societies around the world. The URL for my webpage is: http://www.geocities.com/tokyo/3998/ Thank you for your interest. First, we now have 35 county pages up and running. We have asked each of them to contact Gene Stark to arrange for their databases to be included in his index. We have two programmers looking at the possibility of creating an html generator that will meet our needs. The first need is the ability to link one individual between two database. The second is the ability to produce an index by location, so that the various county pages can point to an index for KY only or for their county only. The third is the ability to scan existing gedcoms or indexes looking for possible matches between databases. A sample web page has been created which can be modified for a particular county, thereby enabling a number of people who have not had previous experience with html to feel confident enough to put up their own home page. There are several other counties in the works. Bill Couch has created the same kind of page of all counties for Arkansas; we anticipate that others will do the same for their states as time goes by. All in all, considering that we have been able to average more than a county a day, I think we have done quite well. If anyone is interested in participating in the discussion of how this is going, feel free to send "subscribe kygenweb-l" to majordomo@teleport.com. One last thing: Scott McGee, where are you? You've been in SLC a week now, and we haven't heard how well you are doing. I for one miss your smiling face. Jeff Murphy 735 NW 8th Redmond, Oregon 97756 h. I am in the continuing process of transcribing the notes that Birtie Whitt Croft had recorded from her memories and those told to her by Anderson Whitt, my Great Grandfather. Just as soon as I finish, you will get the very first printed copy. They are hard to read, and I am typing them just as she wrote them (misspelled words and all). I think you will be pleased with the info. I will do some work on the Tennessee Whitt's just as soon as I find some sources up here. Tullahoma is kinda like Auburn University (where I went to school), if someone stole "the only book" from the library, it would have to close. Not much resources here. Again thanks. I will be in touch soon. Am I correct in assuming that, for those of us not directly connected to a corporate or academic Internet node, the only way to have our genealogy accessible to the World Wide Web is to display it on a Home Page, stored at our local Internet Service Provider (ISP)? That being the case, I'd like to do an informal survey of how much this costs, per month, at your ISP. Please specify: 1 - Basic monthly fee 2 - How much (if any) disk space this includes 3 - Monthly rate for additional disk space ($/MB) 4 - Any additional costs ($/Khits, uploads, etc) 5 - Are you allowed unlimited uploads to bring the page up to date? 6 - Roughly how long does it take to create & transmit your Genweb page(s)? How many megabytes to store your page(s)? 7 - Name of ISP (so I can combine duplicates) What does this have to do with Genweb? Well, I think that the cost of making data available to WWW, to individual genealogists, will influence the degree of participation in the project. Reply to the list and/or to me. I'll summarize the results and make them available to those who contribute. Sincerely, Pierre
